Running Your Van More Cost Effectively

By: Alex McKoy

When you are hunting for van insurance, there are a number of steps that you can take to keep your costs down. Here are a few to get you started:

Avoid claiming on your insurance if at all possible, so that you can build up a substantial no claims discount. The longer you continue to build up a no claims discount for, the bigger it will be, although there is usually a maximum discount level. If you have a no claims bonus on your car insurance, then your van insurance provider may well be willing to match it, so make sure you mention it when you are applying.

Vans tend to see a lot more heavy use than cars, so naturally they have a tendency to break down more. If you rely on your van for work, then it could be worth shelling out for breakdown insurance, which provides a replacement vehicle while yours is being fixed, so that you do not miss any work as a result of your van developing a fault.

If you have still to buy your van, you should try to get the smallest one that will meet your needs, as lighter, smaller, cheaper vans tend to be cheaper to insure than large, heavy, expensive ones.

If you are using your van for business purposes, make sure that you specify this when applying for insurance cover, as a social use only policy will not provide adequate cover.

There are several different levels of insurance cover that you can buy, so make sure you get quotes for all the available options before deciding which type of cover would suit you best.

Many van insurance policies will not actually cover you in the event of the theft of goods or tools from the van, but will only cover you if the whole vehicle is stolen. So if you need van contents insurance, it might be cheaper to get this separately from your van insurance, as it can sometimes be very costly to buy as an add-on.

Factors that might drive up the cost of your insurance include the youth, inexperience, or prior driving convictions of any of the listed drivers of your vehicle. Make sure that you make the insurer aware of all the correct details of the people that will be driving the van, as failing to do so could invalidate your insurance in the event of a claim.

Not only will fitting an alarm and an immobiliser to your vehicle help to deter thieves, and thus reduce your risk of losing your no claims discount, but it can also entitle you to cheaper insurance with some providers, so be sure to mention it when applying.
