The concept of dashboard software, or digital dashboards, came about following the study of decision support systems that took place during the 1970’s. A dashboard software program can track all aspects of a business. In addition to obvious applications such as tracking sales and operations data, digital dashboards can also be used to gather business intelligence on activities such as human resources, recruiting, security, information technology (IT), customer relationship management (CRM), project management, and more. However, like any kind of analytics data, a dashboard software program’s success is often predicated on the metrics that were chosen for monitoring. If the wrong metrics are chose, key performance indicators may not be getting properly tracked despite the most agile and robust dashboard software’s best efforts. Dashboard software is specifically designed to keep C-level executives, business managers and knowledge workers on top of the vital statistics of the business. Like a car's dashboard, dashboard software empowers executives with the tools and insight necessary to drive their business. In order to measure the relative success of various departments within an organization, digital dashboards grant the ability to capture and report specific data points from each department.
